Premier League Relegation Battle

With Arsenal racing off into the title-winning distance, the Premier League needs a new subplot to keep viewers interested in 2023. Thankfully, the scriptwriters have devised a very exciting narrative between now and May and it is one that involves the teams at the bottom of the table.

Because this season’s relegation dogfight is shaping up like no other and whereas there is usually a team cast adrift already, each of the 20 teams within the top flight are still operating as a rather viable concern.

This means it is not just one certainty for relegation and two probable outfits to join them. Instead, it is almost the whole bottom half of the division which is currently fighting for their lives and three of those lives will expire in just a few months.

While the beauty of this season’s relegation battle is the fact that the team crisis changes every week. Consigned to demotion at the start of the month, keeping your head above water at the end of it, and therefore, it is incredibly difficult to predict just who will go down.

With that said, we are going to do our best to predict just who will suffer the drop and the lengthy list of candidates looks as follows:

Bournemouth

After the uncertainty of who would become the permanent Bournemouth boss, the new owners have decided to stick with the man who was previously in charge on an interim basis. That man is Gary O’Neil and since he got the full-time keys to the Vitality Stadium, results have gone against him.

The benefit of O’Neil getting the job permanently is steeped within continuity. The negatives of awarding him the same role mean that Bournemouth does not gain anything in the way of a new manager bounce.

With the Cherries having lost each of their last four league outings, the American owners may have a tough decision to make. Do they stick with what they have until the end of the season, or do they try and roll the managerial dice one last time? This decision may be key in terms of their survival bid.

Everton

You can sack the manager; you cannot sack the board. If it was up to Everton supporters, they would have certainly said goodbye to those in charge of the club. Now those in charge must decide whether to keep Frank Lampard at the helm.

There is no doubt that the atmosphere at Goodison Park is incredibly toxic at present, and this was not helped after their recent home defeat to Southampton. The board was told to stay away by the Police, they may need to stay away more if this run of results continues.

Last season saw Lampard drafted in to salvage a footballing shipwreck and although he managed to get this ship sailing once again, the waters have once again become incredibly choppy. Asking him to repeat the feat two years in a row might just be too big of an ask.

Southampton

A fortnight or so ago it looked as if Southampton’s decision to hire Nathan Jones was looking rather ill-judged. Bottom of the table and a string of successive defeats subsequently recorded since the installation of the former Luton boss.

However, the past week has seen the first shoots of recovery at St Mary’s, and not only did the Saints pick up three massive points on Merseyside but they also secured further progress in both the EFL and FA Cup competitions.

The progress in the latter two will not help the Premier League cause directly but it could offer the Saints some momentum along the way. If that can be converted into precious points, Southampton may just extend their stay in the top tier.

Nottingham Forest

The butt of all jokes across the summer, but it is Nottingham Forest who are laughing loudest at the moment. While manager Steve Cooper certainly has a smile on his face, as results are finally starting to go his way.

Although it took time to work out what his best eleven actually is, the fact that Cooper was afforded time should not be overlooked. Many a Premier League chairman has panicked in the past; many a Premier League manager has been fired too early because of it.

Forest are certainly not out of the woods yet, but they certainly look like they can hold their own against the very best. If they can turn the City Ground into even more of a fortress, it may be the key factor that eventually keeps them up.

Wolves

If we were writing this article in November, Wolves would be far higher on the list. However, three months is an incredibly long time in football and in that time Julen Lopetegui has replaced Bruno Lage at Wolves.

A chronic lack of goals was ultimately Lage’s undoing and although the club are not completely cured of such an attacking ailment, Lopetegui has certainly found some medicine to aid Wolves’ progress up the Premier League table.

With the players that are at the former Spain manager’s disposal, the task to avoid the drop should be far easier for Wolves than some of the other clubs on our list. There was always an abundance of talent at Molineux, now they have a talented coach to work with them.

Leeds

After their recent defeat to Aston Villa, manager Jesse Marsch said that was Leeds’s best performance of the season. However good it was viewed to be, it was still one that generated nothing in the way of points.

At the time of writing the Elland Road outfit has picked just two points from the last 15 on offer. The manager may come across as an incredibly nice guy, but he and his players need to start doing the ugly things.

Nobody won Premier League points for being nice or just performing better and Leeds are guilty of trying without succeeding. They are slowly sliding down the table and there are plenty of other clubs that are ready to overtake them.

The Rest

Leicester will have wished that the World Cup break never come about and with four successive league defeats to digest, manager Brendan Rodgers is looking rather nervy. A feeling he thought he had gotten rid of, a feeling that the supporters are once again returning to.

Although West Ham dealt with the tandem of last season’s Premier and Europa League rather well, the same cannot be said for this season’s European exploits. Will progress in the Europa Conference League stretch this club too much? That is the conundrum that manager David Moyes must solve.

While there is always one club that sinks from the comfort of midtable and on current form that club could be Crystal Palace. Results are going against them and Selhurst Park is no longer a fortress, if this continues into the spring then things may become rather tense within South London.
